Greg Erwin

Greg Erwin enters his first season as crew chief for the No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts/Wurth Ford team for Penske Racing focused on winning races. Erwin is a proven winner in NASCAR and he has a strong history of racing that spans back to his high school years in his hometown of Hatboro, Penn.

Learning his craft from the ground up as he worked on his father’s race team while in high school allowed Erwin to hone his racing skills from an early age. He attended Clemson University where he majored in engineering while returning home during the summer months to work on the family race team.

After graduating in 1992, he earned a motorsport engineering scholarship that was partially funded by Ford and that kept him engaged in racing and school through 1993. During this time, he worked with different teams and landed at Diamond Ridge Motorsports in 1995. The following year he moved to SABCO Racing which later became Ganassi Racing. There, he served as an engineer in various capacities through the 2002 season.

Erwin kept his career moving forward as he joined Richard Childress Racing for the next two years. From there he moved on to Robbie Gordon Motorsports where he earned his first-ever position as a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief. In 2007, an opportunity arose that landed the former racer at Roush Fenway Racing as the crew chief for Greg Biffle. During his tenure with No. 16 machine, the team earned five victories and berths in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship for three consecutive years with the team’s best Chase finish being third place in 2008.

Midway through the 2011 season Erwin and Roush Fenway Racing parted ways and within a week he had found a new home at Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM). Erwin worked as a crew chief for the RPM No. 43 team and driver A.J. Allmendinger and then with driver Aric Almirola through the middle of the 2012 season.

As he enters the 2013 season having accumulated a considerable amount of experience and success, Erwin’s attention in now aimed at earning Penske Racing its second Nationwide Series championship with driver Sam Hornish Jr. behind the wheel of the No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts/Wurth Ford Mustang.

An outdoorsman who enjoys running, hiking and mountain biking, Erwin and his wife Susan have three children, Curtis, Kimberly and Colin. They reside in Mooresville, NC.
