JOSEF NEWGARDEN No. 2 PPG CHEVROLET
START: 5TH
FINISH: 25TH
POINTS: 16TH (-203)
RACE RUNDOWN: Josef Newgarden and the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet once again showed race-winning speed at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday night. Unfortunately, for the five-time winner at the 1.25-mile speedway, his night ended in spectacular fashion during a lap 130 incident. Newgarden would fall back to eighth after starting from the fifth position. By lap 100, he would take the lead and set a torrid pace lapping up to nearly the top 10. Newgarden would be leading when a car spun on the frontstretch, leaving him with nowhere to go. The PPG Chevrolet would eventually land on its side. Fortunately, quick work by the AMR Safety Team would see Newgarden climb out under his own power. He would be seen and released from the infield care center.
NEWGARDEN'S THOUGHTS: "Feel so bad for my PPG team and Chevrolet. Felt like we had the car to beat. Feel fortunate with all the safety processes that INDYCAR has and look forward to getting back on track next week in Road America."
SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN No. 3 DEX IMAGING CHEVROLET
START: 2ND
FINISH: 24TH
POINTS: 8TH (-164)
RACE RUNDOWN: A promising night for Scott McLaughlin and the No. 3 DEX Imaging Chevrolet went sour late after a mechanical issue relegated him to a 24th-place finish at World Wide Technology Raceway. McLaughlin would roll from the outside pole position and settle into third at the start of the 260-lap race. He would put the DEX Imaging Chevrolet in the lead during a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 51. McLaughlin would lead the next 51 circuits before dropping back a couple positions during the next cycle of green flag stops. His fortune would begin to shift on lap 148, when he was ordered to give up three positions in the running order for a pit road violation. The DEX Imaging crew would try as they might to make up lost ground, but a mechanical issue on lap 216 brought the No.3 car to pit road and ultimately ended their day.
MCLAUGHLIN'S THOUGHTS: "Something broke in the left rear. Lucky it happened in Turn 2. Coming down the straight, I felt like someone hit me, but the spotter said I was clear. Really bummed for everybody on the DEX Imaging Chevy. Very disappointed because we had a decent car and a good run going."
WILL POWER No. 12 VERIZON CHEVROLET
START: 1ST
FINISH: 27TH
POINTS: 7TH (-154)
RACE RUNDOWN: After achieving Team Penske's 700th overall pole position and 71st of his storied INDYCAR career, hopes were high for Will Power and the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet team. Power would settle into second place at the start. Just prior to their first pit stop of the race, Power would blow a right front tire sending his Verizon Chevrolet into the wall, ending a promising night early. Power would be seen and released from the infield care center.
POWER'S THOUGHTS: "It was a right front tire failure. I felt it last night while we were running, we were pretty much flat through Turn 3 and 4 every lap. Unfortunate, I feel bad for everybody on the Verizon crew. We had a good car, sitting there saving fuel, trying to get a big number to make it a four stop. I know (David) Malukas was just taking off. I figured he just catch traffic and get to him and probably knock a stop off the race. Nothing was going to stop a tire failure, but that's the way it is. We'll go to the next one and see if we can get a win. We're knocking on the door, but not today."
The NTT INDYCAR SERIES will be back in action next week at Road America in Wisconsin, where Team Penske looks to defend a podium sweep in 2024. The XPEL Grand Prix at Road America can be seen live on FOX beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET.
