It was a challenging Saturday at Barber Motorsports Park for Team Penske as the teams fought to find speed in both a third practice session and qualifying. The team has dominated the Birmingham, Alabama road course in recent years but with all practice sessions slowed by a number of caution periods, Team Penske has struggled to find consistency this weekend. Championship points leader Josef Newgarden and the No. 2 Fitzgerald USA Dallara/Chevrolet, along with Simon Pagenaud and the No. 22 Menards Dallara/Chevrolet, were unable to advance beyond the first round of qualifying. Will Power and the No. 12 Verizon Dallara/Chevrolet made it to the second round of qualifying but could not advance beyond that. The team has historically performed well at Barber, winning six of the nine total INDYCAR races at the track and three in a row at the Alabama road course. The team will work hard overnight to find speed for tomorrow’s race in order return to its usual fast form.
