Team Notes:  Throughout the weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, Team Penske has worked on closing the gap between them and the teams that participated in a test session at the Alabama track following the Long Beach race weekend. After electing to use an extra set of primary Firestone tires during the Friday practice session, the three Team Penske teams felt they had done just that heading into the Saturday afternoon qualifying session. Qualifying to set the field for tomorrow's Grand Prix of Alabama occurred following a morning practice session in which Scott McLaughlin once again paced the Team Penske trio of drivers with the fourth-fastest lap of the session in the No. 3 Sonsio Chevrolet. Will Power found the limits of his No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevrolet as he spun late in the session, stopping in a sand trap and needing assistance in exiting. In qualifying it was McLaughlin again finishing in the fourth position, ensuring that he will roll off from the outside of the second row for tomorrow's race. Three-time Barber winner, Josef Newgarden, received a dose of bad luck as the end of the second round of qualifying when a red flag cut short a final lap that could have propelled him into the Firestone Fast Six. The driver of the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet will start the race from the 7th position. Power will rely on his past success at Barber to improve upon his 19th-place starting position. He is the driver to come from the deepest in the field to win at Barber when he took the checkered flag in 2012 after starting ninth.
