Team Notes: The month of May has begun with a race weekend that has quickly become one of the favorite Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) traditions, the GMR Grand Prix on the IMS Road Course. Team Penske drivers have won eight of the 11 NTT INDYCAR SERIES races contested on the immaculate 2.439-mile circuit inside the famed 2.5-mile oval. Two practice sessions preceded the late afternoon qualifying session to set the field for tomorrow’s 85-lap event, with the Josef Newgarden and the No. 2 PPG Chevy team missing a significant portion of the second session with clutch issues. It mattered little as Newgarden narrowly missed out on the NTT P1 Pole Award and will start from the third position. The driver that did win the pole position – for the 64th time in his career – was Will Power, who snagged the top spot as the last driver to post an official time in the Firestone Fast Six session. The Australian qualifying stalwart is now just three pole positions away from tying Mario Andretti for the most in INDYCAR SERIES history. Scott McLaughlin was solid throughout the Friday sessions, but a bad opening lap on the Firestone alternate tires in the second qualifying round relegated him to 11th on the starting grid.
