Team Notes:  At the Indianapolis 500 it is all about speed instead of the normal measurements using time, and for good reason as the eye-popping speed numbers are something to behold. For qualifying, it comes down to the fastest four-lap average around the 2.5-mile rectangular-shaped oval. Early in the qualifying session the conditions were optimal for fast laps, but as they day progressed the sun began to peak through the clouds and the track surface began to heat up. Unfortunately, this was the time that the Team Penske trio of drivers were due to make their first attempts. Will Power and the No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevy team made a solid run in those conditions to slot themselves into the Top 12 qualifiers that will have an opportunity for the NTT P1 Award on Sunday afternoon. Josef Newgarden was on-track for his second qualifying attempt when a second rain shower ended the day, reverting the driver of the No. 2 Shell Fuel Rewards Chevrolet to his original starting position of 14th. Scott McLaughlin was able to make a second attempt after the initial rain shower forced a delay but was not able to improve on his time and will start 26th.
