For the second consecutive year, Porsche Penske Motorsport has won the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship title in the GTP category, with the No. 6 Porsche 963 closing out a championship season at this weekend’s Petit Le Mans. In Saturday night’s IMSA season finale at Road Atlanta, drivers Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet teamed up to earn a fourth-place finish, clinching both the IMSA Driver and Team Championships to mark the 48th title won by Team Penske, nearly six decades after Roger Penske founded the team.
Sports car racing is the foundation of Team Penske’s rich history, which includes teams competing this season in INDYCAR, NASCAR, IMSA and WEC. Roger Penske himself was a renowned sports car racer who was named Sports Illustrated’s “Driver of the Year” in 1961 for his accomplishments behind the wheel.
With over 650 wins, more than 700 pole positions, 20 Indianapolis 500 victories and three Daytona 500 and Daytona 24-Hour triumphs, Team Penske’s title-winning efforts this weekend added to the organization’s legacy, which began in a two-bay garage in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania in 1966.
Team Penske first partnered with Porsche in 1972, contesting a 917/10 in the Can-Am Series while winning six of the nine races to claim the series championship with driver George Follmer. The Team Penske and Porsche alliance continued in 1973 with driver Mark Donohue racing the 917/30 in the Can-Am Series, as he won seven of the eight races to secure back-to-back championships for the team.
The two legendary organizations reunited in sports car competition beginning in 2005 with Porsche RS Spyder dominating in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Together they produced winning seasons for three consecutive years highlighted by Championships in the LMP2 class and 24 victories in 34 races. Eight of those victories were overall wins across all ALMS classes, including a memorable victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2008.
Teaming up for a global partnership that formed Porsche Penske Motorsport in 2023, the two racing powerhouses proved to once again have the formula for success. Fielding the Porsche 963 in the top class of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship and, for the first time in the team’s history, the FIA World Endurance Championship – the new formed program showed the world what it was capable of.
With Campbell and Jaminet teaming up in the No. 6 Porsche 963 for the 2025 season, the combination was a perfect match given their previous success together. In 2022, the duo helped Pfaff Motorsports win the driver, team and manufacturer championships in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship Grand Touring Daytona Pro (GTD PRO) class.
The duo began their championship season in 2025 by capturing three consecutive podium positions in the first three races of the year, before producing an impressive victory in May at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
In addition to the championship performance by Campbell, Jaminet and the No. 6 team, the Porsche Penske Motorsport No. 7 963 team with drivers Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy won the 2025 Michelin Endurance Cup, which is awarded to the top-performing drivers in the five-race competition encompassing marquee endurance races on the IMSA schedule. This included convincing victories in the season-opening Rolex 24-Hour race in Daytona and the 2025 12 Hours of Sebring
Producing a perfect ending to the winning 2025 season, Porsche also claimed the GTP Manufacturers’ Championship and the Michelin Endurance Cup Manufacturers’ Championship following Saturday night's Petit Le Mans results.
Roger Penske on the 2025 championship season:
“This championship is a testament to the entire Porsche Penske Motorsport team and the hard work and dedication they invest into this program every day. The season started with four consecutive victories, including back-to-back 24 Hours of Daytona wins, and has continued into 10 total podiums. That type of success isn’t accomplished without great drivers, leaders and a resilient crew. The commitment to winning together has been unwavering and defending the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship title is reflection of those efforts from all the men and women across both Mooresville and Germany.”
Mathieu Jaminet Quote: “I’ve been chasing a success like this for over two years. In 2023 and 2024, I gave everything I had, but it just wasn’t enough for a championship title, which was frustrating. That makes winning it now feel even more special. Doing it alongside my mate Matt Campbell makes it even more memorable. Huge thanks to everyone who played a part in this achievement.”
Matt Campbell Quote: “What a relief! We can now call ourselves champions of the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – simply amazing! We’ve had a fantastic year. Many thanks to the team, to my friend and teammate Mathieu Jaminet, and to everyone working behind the scenes. It’s a perfect day for our entire crew.”
